Morning Devotion: Endurance

Hebrews 12:1-2 NKJV “Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.”

Because Jesus endured, because those in the Scriptures endured, we can endure. The life of the Christian is a life of endurance.

The Merriam-Webster’s dictionary defines endurance as, ” the ability to withstand hardship or adversity especially : the ability to sustain a prolonged stressful effort or activity.”

The Bible has plenty to say about endurance. One of the most impactful Scriptures on the subject to me is James 5:10-11 NKJV “My brethren, take the prophets, who spoke in the name of the Lord, as an example of suffering and patience. Indeed we count them blessed who endure. You have heard of the perseverance of Job and seen the end intended by the Lord—that the Lord is very compassionate and merciful.”

The entirety of the Scriptures is an example of how to endure but Hebrews gives us the way of endurance plainly. We must lay aside every weight and sin that snares us. Notice it says weight and sin. Weights aren’t necessarily sin, but they slow us down, they hinder us. Paul said that things may be permissible but not profitable.

Take inventory of things in your life; actions, habits and thoughts. Is their anything hindering your walk with the Lord? Big or small, even if its too much TV, throw it off and run your race.

We run well when we look to Jesus, when we keep our attention on the Word and we live our lives by it. Endure today. Cast aside weights and sin and follow after Jesus today.
