Morning Devotion: Written

But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’ ”
Matthew 4:4 NKJV

When Jesus was tempted in the wilderness He responded to the devil by quoting from Deuteronomy. At each temptation Jesus went to the written Word to shut the enemy down.

We are to do the same thing. “Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.” James 4:7 NKJV. How do we submit to God? By obeying His Word. How do we resist the devil? Psalm 119 has the answer.

Psalm 119:9-11 NKJV “How can a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed according to Your word. With my whole heart I have sought You; Oh, let me not wander from Your commandments! Your word I have hidden in my heart, That I might not sin against you.”

2 Timothy 3:16-17 NKJV “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.”

James 5:10-11 NIV “Brothers and sisters, as an example of patience in the face of suffering, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. As you know, we count as blessed those who have persevered. You have heard of Job’s perseverance and have seen what the Lord finally brought about. The Lord is full of compassion and mercy.”

There are those who try to divide the Bible in ways that go against the Scriptures themselves. People say Jesus corrected the Old Testament and that Paul didn’t agree with Jesus. No, from Genesis to Revelation it is all one book. Did Jesus fulfill the law? Yes, did He do away with the Old Testament, No. James wrote that we take the prophets as our mentors. Paul wrote all Scripture is given for our reproof, correction and instruction.

The Written Word is what Jesus used during temptation, it’s what we need to use during temptation. The Bible is what we turn to for instruction and correction. Spend time in the Word everyday, it is truth, direction, hope, encouragement, it is everything we need.
