Evening Devotion: Heart

“Hope deferred makes the heart sick, But when the desire comes, it is a tree of life. He who despises the word will be destroyed, But he who fears the commandment will be rewarded.”
Proverbs 13:12‭-‬13 NKJV

Those are not verses you typically find on a coffee cup or in a journal but they really do hit home if you think about it. We’ve all heard the term false hope. People just keep leading people to believe in something that they know is not going to happen.

Hope deferred can be the same thing. You keep hearing messages on breakthrough, people have been talking about revival for years and you see nothing on the horizon. Then some guy talks about the cloud the size of a man’s hand and it does nothing but lead to more despair.

Don’t despair, the next verse shows us where our hope should be, “but he who fears the commandment will be rewarded. The emphasis and placement of our hope should be in the written Word.

Hope deferred makes our heart sick when our hearts are not secure in God. Proverbs 13:12-13 may not be on coffee cups but Proverbs 3:5-6 is everywhere.

Proverbs 3:5-6 NKJV “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.”

That’s how you beat hope deferred. You direct your heart to the Lord and His Word. Proverbs four says you incline your ear to His sayings and keep them in the midst of your heart.

Keep your heart by staying in the Word. From your heart flow the issues of life. When you abide in the Word you will always have light for your path.
