Morning Devotion: Church

“…on this rock I will build My church…” Matthew 16:18

The Lord Jesus has been building His church since the day of Pentecost and the gates of Hell have never and will never prevail against it. Trial, tribulation, and persecution have never stopped the building of the church!

Matthew 16:15-18 NKJV “He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter answered and said, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Jesus answered and said to him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in heaven. And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.”

These should be very comforting words to the church. No matter the year, the cornerstone of the church is that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.

This truth connects us to all of church history. Many times we can see the church as what is going on today but we are connected to a two thousand year history. Any false teaching the devil brings to the church today has been dealt with sometime in the past and when we know church history we can forgo much of our struggles with false teaching.

I was saved in the late 90’s so music from the 90’s and early 2000’s tends to be my favorite. Lately though, there has been something about listening to hymns. Just knowing I’m hearing something that has been sung for hundreds of years is amazing.

Christ has been building His church for a long time, it is a great benefit to us to be connected to the voices of the past. Every generation has the issues they focus on good and bad, we need the insight from faithful men of the past in our day because as Ecclesiastes says, there is nothing new under the sun. Church history didn’t start when your church was launched. We do ourselves a disservice when we become our own reference point for building or leading the church. We have 2000 years of church history to learn from, let’s take advantage of that wisdom.
