“There remains therefore a rest for the people of God.” Hebrews 4:9 NKJV
Matthew 11:28-30 NKJV “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”
As Christians we rest in the finished work of Jesus Christ. We trust in the redemption He accomplished and we know that salvation is by grace and not by works. Being at rest in the finished work of Christ doesn’t mean that there isn’t something for us to do. James talks about faith and works.
Rest doesn’t mean we aren’t doing anything. The rest the Bible talks about is a trusting in what Jesus has accomplished. Obedience is not a work but an act of love. Jesus repeatedly said if you love me you will obey Me (John 14:15, 21, 23, 24). Part of our rest is trusting in the power and grace of the Holy Spirit to help us walk rightly before God. Jesus said in Matthew seven that the way to life was narrow and difficult. Resisting sin is work and takes effort yet we can be at rest while we work to resist sin. We rest in the power of God that overcomes temptation yet we work in keeping watch over our hearts and thoughts.
Be encouraged this morning to rest in what Jesus Christ has done. Resting in His work enables us to walk in obedience. Our obedience is no longer about us working in our own strength but having the power of the Holy Spirit enabling our obedience. We rest from our work as the Holy Spirit works in us enabling our obedience.
