“And with this the words of the prophets agree, just as it is written:”
Acts 15:15 NKJV
From beginning to end, the words of the Bible agree. There are prophecies that have been fulfilled and those that are still yet to be fulfilled. One of the things I love about Scripture is how Moses and David would rehearse all that God did for Israel. In the book of Acts there are occassions where the Old Testament is summarized, the stoning of Stephen being one of them.
Just as the words of the prophets agree, so too must we agree with the Word of God. We don’t get to change what God has said with a changing culture. We don’t have the option to ignore things we don’t like and we can’t rip verses out of context to apply it to our own situation.
When we read the New Testament is good to remind ourselves that most of the books were letters and we should read them as letters. Originally, neither the Old or New Testaments had chapter or verse. Every now and again, it’s a good idea to read a book in one sitting but at the very least we should always read three verses before and after the verse we are focusing on.
The Bible is full of encouragement and correction. It is true that the Bible has many promises to help us in our daily lives, but we need to find those promises, not just see a phrase and rip it from its context. Just as the prophets agree, let us agree with the Word and conform our lives to it.
