Morning Devotion: Liberty

“Now the Lord is the Spirit and where the Ruach Adonai is, there is freedom.”
2 Corinthians 3:17 TLV

Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. The Greek word for liberty in this verse means we are not a slave. We have been set free from the slavery of sin and are no longer in bondage to the will of the flesh.

Even though we have been set at liberty as Jesus proclaimed in Luke 4:18, in Romans 6:15-23 Paul says we are slaves to whom we obey. He goes on to tell us to present our members as slaves to righteousness for holiness.

When we receive Jesus as Savior, we also make Him Lord. As Christians, we are to submit to the Lordship of Jesus. The liberty that we are granted is not to do whatever we wish but to follow the good path that is laid out for us in Scripture.

Galatians 5:13, 1 Peter 2:16, 1 Corinthians 8:9, and several other New Testament Scriptures warn against using the liberty we have as a right to continue in sin or cause someone else to sin. We have been given precious liberty. Let’s not squander our inheritance like the prodigal son.

The liberty that we have been given sets us on a path of victory and success. That doesn’t mean life is grand and there are no difficulties, the liberty we have means we don’t have to be in bondage anymore.

The liberty we have means we can overcome the struggle, the addiction, the anger, and whatever sin or temptation we face we have victory through our liberty in Christ.
