Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. How many times have we heard that verse? Did you know that’s not the whole verse? 2 Corinthians 6:14 TLV “Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. For what partnership is there between righteousness and lawlessness? Or what fellowship does light have with darkness?”

The phrase; do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers, is often used in terms of dating or marriage relationships. While that is not the context, it does bring up an interesting point; most of us would agree, that we should be in a relationship with another believer, but is that enough? Someone is a Christian, but do you have the same beliefs? Before you can answer that, you need to ask yourself, do you know what you believe? I don’t mean generically, like, I love Jesus. What are your beliefs about the Bible, the nature of God, the sacrifice of Jesus, and what it means to live a Christian life?  You need to know the answer to these questions for yourself before you can gauge if you are equally yoked with another Christian.

Do you both put the same emphasis on Bible reading? Do you pray; or want to pray together? If one of you has a more narrow approach to holy living, chances are, that person will be drug down by the one with a more broad view. These are things you need to think through. Most of us will ask about favorite movies, favorite foods, dislikes, and such, but we rarely broach the subject of spiritual matters.

From a Christian perspective, your relationship should have time in the Word and praying together at the center. If Jesus is important in your personal life, He should be an important part of your relationship as well. If you have personal Bible reading and study time, you should have that in your relationship.

Make Jesus a central part of your relationship through Bible reading, praying together, and talking about what you read. Will it make all your problems go away? No, but it will help you to handle them. Being on the same page spiritually will help other areas of the relationship go smoothly.
