Notes

A Foundation in Genesis

  • Gen. 2:15-17 NASB95
  • Gen. 3:1-7
    • Eve took her eyes off God and put them on her own desires.
    • She ignored the Word of God and substituted her own interpretation.
    • God gave them an opportunity to repent, but they chose blame.
  • Gen. 4:1-12
    • Cain blamed his brother for his disobedience.
    • Because he did not keep his flesh in check, he committed the sin of murder.
    • Gen. 4:7
      • Sin (H#2403): offense (Root H#2398): to miss. Be led astray.
      • Crouching (H#7257): brood, lurk, imbed.
      • Door: (H#6607): an opening; a place.
      • Desire: (H#8669): Stretching out after. (root): to run after.
      • Master it: (H#4910): to rule, to have dominion over, have power over, reign over.
      •  “If you do well [believing Me and doing what is acceptable and pleasing to Me], will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well [but ignore My instruction], sin crouches at your door; its desire is for you [to overpower you], but you must master it.” – Amplified

Can We Master Sin?

  • We like to blame the devil or our flesh. We want to believe sin is inevitable.
    • When it comes to the thought of murder, do we believe action is unavoidable? No
    • Most would believe lying is just a part of life. We even develop categories for types of lies.
    • Why do we believe the inclination to murder can and should be overcome, but lying is normal?
