Notes

Matt. 4:12-17

The word repent in Hebrew is teshuvah, which means to return – to return to our natural state.

Gen. 1:26-28

Even after the fall, we were not helpless against sin. Our sinful nature is dominant, but we still have a free choice.

Gen. 4:1-8 –>Because Cain did not walk in obedience, it opened the door to the enemy.

Js. 1:14-15 KJV “But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed.15 Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.” –> or fully grown, other translations say.

Does James imply we are helpless against sin, or do other verses imply bondage to sin is inevitable?

1 Cor. 10:1-13

Eph. 2:1-10

Rom. 6:1-23

Psa. 119:11

The Month of Elul is about renewing our minds to the new creation. We are completely new in Christ.

2 Cor. 5:17 AMPC “Therefore if any person is [ingrafted] in Christ (the Messiah) he is a new creation (a new creature altogether); the old [previous moral and spiritual condition] has passed away. Behold, the fresh and new has come!”

2 Cor. 10:4 KJV “(For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;)” –> The shofar blast during the month of Elul is an awakening blast in us and a spiritual weapon against the enemy.

Jonah, a prophet of God, was sent to a pagan nation to declare judgment. But the purpose of the decree of judgment was to bring about repentance in the people.

Jonah 3:1-4:2
