Holiness in Life (1 Pt. 1:13-25)

Notes

1 Pt. 1:13-25 LSB

“As Israel was girded, eating the Passover, so we are to be ready for Jesus’ coming.” – Vine’s Expository Dictionary.

Abraham had to leave his land, kin, and father’s house. We must leave our past life, patterns, and sometimes even hangouts to pursue holiness. (See. Heb. 12:14; Eph. 4:24).

“Gird up your minds for action.” – Thinking, knowing, and reflection with the intent to obey (also v. 14).

“Sober in spirit.” – watchfulness, alert, awake

  • 1 Pt. 5:8-9 AMPC “Be well balanced (temperate, sober of mind), be vigilant and cautious at all times; for that enemy of yours, the devil, roams around like a lion roaring [in fierce hunger], seeking someone to seize upon and devour. 9 Withstand him; be firm in faith [against his onset—rooted, established, strong, immovable, and determined], knowing that the same (identical) sufferings are appointed to your brotherhood (the whole body of Christians) throughout the world.”
  • Parable of the Virgins (Mt. 25:1-13).
  • Disciples in the Garden (Lk. 22:46). – “Pray that you may not enter into temptation.

“fix your hope completely on the grace to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.”

  • Hope = expectation
  • Heb. 12:2 Jesus is the author and perfecter of our faith.

Verses 14-18

Obedient Children – this is the difference from their forefathers (2 Kgs. 17:15-17 & Isa. 55:1-7)

Proverbs 4:20-27 AMPC “My son, attend to my words; consent and submit to my sayings. 21 Let them not depart from your sight; keep them in the center of your heart. 22 For they are life to those who find them, healing and health to all their flesh. 23 Keep and guard your heart with all vigilance and above all that you guard, for out of it flow the springs of life. 24 Put away from you false and dishonest speech, and willful and contrary talk put far from you. 25 Let your eyes look right on [with fixed purpose], and let your gaze be straight before you. 26 Consider well the path of your feet, and let all your ways be established and ordered aright. 27 Turn not aside to the right hand or to the left; remove your foot from evil.”

Be holy: blameless, consecrated.

  • Gen. 17:1 LSB “Now it happened that when Abram was ninety-nine years old, Yahweh appeared to Abram and said to him, “I am God Almighty; Walk before Me and be blameless,”
  • Ex. 19:10 LSB “Yahweh also said to Moses, “Go to the people and set them apart as holy today and tomorrow, and let them wash their garments;”
  • 1 Ths. 5:16-23 AMPC “Be happy [in your faith] and rejoice and be glad-hearted continually (always); 17 Be unceasing in prayer [praying perseveringly]; 18 Thank [God] in everything [no matter what the circumstances may be, be thankful and give thanks], for this is the will of God for you [who are] in Christ Jesus [the Revealer and Mediator of that will]. 19 Do not quench (suppress or subdue) the [Holy] Spirit; 20 Do not spurn the gifts and utterances of the prophets [do not depreciate prophetic revelations nor despise inspired instruction or exhortation or warning]. 21 But test and prove all things [until you can recognize] what is good; [to that] hold fast. 22 Abstain from evil [shrink from it and keep aloof from it] in whatever form or whatever kind it may be. 23 And may the God of peace Himself sanctify you through and through [separate you from profane things, make you pure and wholly consecrated to God]; and may your spirit and soul and body be preserved sound and complete [and found] blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ (the Messiah).”

“Redeemed (bought back) with the precious (honored) blood of Christ.”

v. 22 “obedience to the truth purified your souls…”

  • Obedience: Attentive hearkening (Prov. 3 AMPC)
