The Person of the Word

One of the most amazing Bible passages to me is John 1:1-5, 14. The Wuest Expanded Translation puts things into a new perspective. “In the beginning the Word was existing. And the Word was in fellowship with God the Father. And the Word as to his existence was absolute deity. This Word was in the beginning in fellowship with God the Father. All things through His intermediate agency came to being, and without Him there came into being not even one thing which was come into existence. In Him life was existing. And this aforementioned life was the light of men. And the light in the darkness was constantly shining. And the darkness did not overwhelm it.”

Before we read verse fourteen, let’s look at Genesis 1:2, 3-5, 14-19 NKJV “The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good; and God divided the light from the darkness. God called the light Day, and the darkness He called Night. So the evening and the morning were the first day. 14 Then God said, “Let there be lights in the firmament of the heavens to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs and seasons, and for days and years; 15 and let them be for lights in the firmament of the heavens to give light on the earth”; and it was so. 16 Then God made two great lights: the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night. He made the stars also. 17 God set them in the firmament of the heavens to give light on the earth, 18 and to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good. 19 So the evening and the morning were the fourth day.”

Before there was ever a sun, moon, and stars, there was light, which was the pre-incarnate Jesus.

John 1:14 (Wuest) “And the Word, entering a new mode of existence, became flesh, and lived in a tent [His physical body] among us. And we gazed with attentive and careful regard and spiritual perception at His glory, a glory such as that of a uniquely-begotten Son from the Father, full of grace and truth”.

This makes my brain go crazy; the bigness of our savior Jesus is amazing. Too many times, when I pick up my Bible, I treat it like a book and not the living person that the book is. When I sit down with my Bible, I am sitting down with Jesus himself. It is too easy to agree with the verses in John mentally; we must do more than that. We must receive the reality of the personhood of the Bible into our lives. So many times, we can pick up our Bible read and not receive anything from the reading.

Scripture says Jesus was tempted in every manner we are, but He did not sin, which tells me there is victory in the Word to defeat every temptation. Just reading Romans six helps us to develop a mindset of victory. When we have difficulty getting into the Word, we need to pray and ask that the Person of the Word come alive to us if we want to develop the love of the Word Psalm 119 talks about approaching the Word as the Person of Jesus, our savior, redeemer, healer, and teacher.
