“Make every effort to present yourself before God as tried and true, as an unashamed worker cutting a straight path with the word of truth.”
2 Timothy 2:15 TLV
Understanding Scripture in its context is important. We need to get the story right, and we need to understand that all of Scripture points to Jesus.
In studying Scripture, we have over two thousand years of church history to consult. We don’t have to worry about misunderstanding or misapplying texts when we consult the men of the past.
Every error the devil can present to us has already been dealt with. All he can do is repackage old heresies. Don’t fall into the trap of “it’s just me and my Bible”, or “All I need is the Holy Spirit, I don’t need a commentary, that’s just man’s opinion”
Here’s a question for you, how do you know what you hear is the Holy Spirit? How do you check it? If you heard the Holy Spirit, do you think the commentary writer didn’t?
Commentaries and theology books help us stay on track and within the bounds of Christian orthodoxy. Christianity has been around since Jesus rose from the dead. We would be wise to consult those who have gone before us so that we don’t fall into old traps that are being disguised in new ways.
