The word repent in Hebrew is teshuvah, which means to return – to return to our natural state.
Gen. 1:26-28
Even after the fall, we were not helpless against sin. Our sinful nature is dominant, but we still have a free choice.
Gen. 4:1-8 –>Because Cain did not walk in obedience, it opened the door to the enemy.
Js. 1:14-15 KJV “But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed.15 Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.” –> or fully grown, other translations say.
Does James imply we are helpless against sin, or do other verses imply bondage to sin is inevitable?

The Month of Elul is about renewing our minds to the new creation. We are completely new in Christ.
2 Cor. 5:17 AMPC “Therefore if any person is [ingrafted] in Christ (the Messiah) he is a new creation (a new creature altogether); the old [previous moral and spiritual condition] has passed away. Behold, the fresh and new has come!”
2 Cor. 10:4 KJV “(For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;)” –> The shofar blast during the month of Elul is an awakening blast in us and a spiritual weapon against the enemy.
Jonah, a prophet of God, was sent to a pagan nation to declare judgment. But the purpose of the decree of judgment was to bring about repentance in the people.
